A Pearl | Varanasi, 2014

Like every other morning, Poonam’s mother has sent her out to the kirana shop to buy a packet of milk. Never was she aware that it was a very special day for Poonam. And how would she? Poonam’s dreams are always very much her own – Poonam guards them like Godsend assets and the only other person who knew about those was her grandma, well, just a bit. You know what happened last night? After all these long years, Poonam, the bird that she was, has, for the first time, spread her wings in the air while she was looking at the Ganges below, and behold, she could still see the pink hibiscus that she floated in the river last evening, and was expecting to reach her grandmother, who now stays in a distant village named Swarag, or something. Trying to memorize what else she saw in the wee hour dream, she was strolling down the stone paved alley, following a stray grasshopper which is still trying to find its way to the greens. She was crossing the makeshift workshop that houses all those mud built lions and durga idols when she realized the Rs 10 note has vanished. There it was, in her hand, even a few minutes back, and like that bazigaar she met last evening at the ghats, someone has tricked the note to disappear into a bloom of smoky clouds that was coming out of the earthen chulha at the street corner.
Poonam was sad. She would not be able to take the milk home. Her brother would be hungry. Her mom might beat her up. Her dad would not even bother, but her brother will keep crying. Above all, she might lose track of what else she saw in the dreams last night. And then, God gifted Poonam with a pearl, that rolled down her cheeks. I didn’t miss it.
